Purpose and Aims

The main purpose of the IVCA is to be a contact point for those interested in Veteran Cyles.  We encourage interests and activities relating to all old human-powered vehicles of one or more wheels deriving from the velocipede tradition. We support and encourage research and classification of their history and act as a communication medium between clubs, societies and museums world-wide on mutual matters relating to old cycles. The official languages of the Association are English, French and German.

Once a year a veteran cycle Rally is co-ordinated by the IVCA. It is held in a different country each year.

 Rallies have been held in: Australia 2003, Austria 1998, Belgium 1992, 2002, Czech Republic 1993, 2001, England 1981, 1983, 1984, 1986, 1994, France 1982, 1988, 1999, Germany 1991, 1996, Netherlands 1985, 1987, 1995, Scotland 1990, Switzerland 1985, 1989, 1997, USA 1991, 2000.

The aim is to issue four editions a year, depending on the material received, and it aims to cover forthcoming veteran cycle events which have an international interest, details of displays or museums showing old cycles, news of veteran cycle clubs' activities, articles relating to aspects of old cycles, discussions on IVCA matters, items for sale and wanted or advertisements from commercial concerns connected with cycles. Guidelines for the entrance of machines to the Annual IVCA Rally

At the Annual IVCA Rally bicycles are allowed up to 1940. Also bicycles with special features from 1941 on, but not younger than 25 years.

The races of all classes (except children’s classes) shall be ridden over a distance of one english mile (especially classes of 4, 8 to 10 and 12). Additional contests like Slalom, Slow Race, Long Distance Race and similar can be included in the total judging by a point system.

Classification for the Veteran Cycle World Championships

Class 1: Hobbyhorses (Draisiennes). Replicas are allowed, the few original machines are often not ridden for reasons of preservation.

Class 2: Macmillan-like bicycles. Replicas are allowed, because there are no originals existing.

Class 3: Velocipedes (Michaux- or Lallement- type). Only originals are admissible.

Class 4: High Bicycles. Only originals are admissible.

Class 5: Tricycles of the 1880s with solid tyres. Only originals are admissible.

Class 6: Later tricycles with pneumatic tyres. Only originals are admissible.

Class 7: Safety bicycles with solid tyres. Only originals are admissible.

Class 8: Safety bicycles with pneumatic tyres and fixed wheel. Only originals are admissible.

Class 9: Safety bicycles with pneumatic tyres and freewheel, gears possible. Only originals are admissible.

Class 10: Racing bicycles up to 1940. Only originals are admissible.

Class 11: Tandems and Multicycles. Only originals are admissible.

Class 12: Bicycles with special technical features from 1941 on, but not younger than 25 years. Only originals are admissible.

Note A: All classes may be divided into Ladies and Gentlemen’s races if sufficient entries are received.

Note B: Solid tyred tandems of the 1880s, quadricycles and sociables of similar constructions and can start with class 5. Original high wheel bicycles with wooden frames can start with class 3.

Note C: Originals are considered as machines, which fulfill the regulation ‘three out of five’. In case of velocipedes and high wheel bicycles the 100% originality of three of five parts of the machine is obligatory for participation in the races.

The five parts are for the velocipede: (1) frame, (2) front forks, (3) front wheel, (4) back wheel, (5) saddle spring.

The examination by the regulation ‘three out of five’ of the machines ridden by the first three riders of the classes 3 and 4 is undertaken before the victory ceremony by two well accepted experts from the participants in the rally, who are authorized by the race organisers. In all questions about approval of machines and awarding prizes these experts are the highest authorities of the type of machine.

Note D: Children will be allowed to race with any machine (including replicas) and may be divided into up to 10 years and up to 14.
